How to Heat-Set Nylon

Heat-Setting of nylon provides structural stability to the fiber and reduces wrinkling during processing. Heat-setting may be performed before or after dyeing.  It is recommended that scouring of goods be performed prior to heat-setting otherwise it will be very difficult for stain removal afterwards.  Dyeability properties such as dye absorption rate and fiber dye capacity are also affected by heat-setting.  Because there are numerous methods to heat-setting nylon, such as radiant heat, dry heat, steam, and boiling water, and depending on the type and form of nylon being processed, it is recommended that the processor contact the manufacturer for the best procedure for their product in addition to heat-treating affects on the dyeability of nylon.

 

For Type 6.6 Nylon

392-420°F(200-215°C) for 15-30 seconds.

The addition of humidity in the form of steam helps to prevent oxidation and yellowing.

For Type 6 Nylon

350-380°F(177-193°C) for 15-30 seconds

The addition of humidity in the form of steam helps to prevent oxidation and yellowing.
